Any geeks who had plenty of late nights to kill during the ’90s are well-acquainted with Mystery Science Theater 3000, the late-night Comedy Central staple in which the host and his wisecracking robots riffed on the worst sci-fi and horror films in cinema history. During the time, there was a split between fans of Joel Hodgson, the series creator and host during MST3K’s early years, and those loyal to his successor, Mike Nelson, who doubled as head writer. Now that MST3K is nothing more than a hazy memory obscured by bong smoke and Doritos dust, Hodgson and Nelson have launched competing movie-riffing projects. Of the two, Hodgson’s Cinematic Titanic is truer to the MST3K formula, featuring Hodgson ripping B-movies with some of the most memorable members of the original cast, including “TV’s Frank” Conniff and Trace Beaulieu, the voice of Crow T. Robot. During their live appearances, Hodgson, Conniff, Beaulieu, and other MST3K alums sit in the front of a theater and make smart-ass cracks about the worst vintage cinema they can find. For this double feature, the incompetent 1961 swords-and-sandals epic Samson and the 7 Miracles of the World and the pulpy horror flick Rattlers enjoy the dubious honor. It’s a rare opportunity to recapture those lost evenings you once shared with Hodgson and his store of best-forgotten movie relics. Intoxicants are discouraged, but Doritos are still an option.
