The bio of choreographer Opiyo Okach reads like a case study for the geography of the Internet age. Born in Magadi, Kenya, he grew up steeped in village life before developing an interest in theater and dance in high school. He moved to London to study mime, and upon his return to Kenya co-founded La Compagnie Gàara, that country’s first contemporary dance company. His pieces fuse modern movement and graceful improvisation with aspects of traditional ritual and dance, an artistic vision that has won him several awards in Africa and Europe. He now spends equal amounts of time in France and Kenya, and he made his U.S. debut at Yale in 2010. That’s interesting, for sure, but also relevant to tonight’s performance, Okach’s work-in-progress called Body Evidence. It’s part of the venue’s commitment to presenting new work from Africa, and in it he continues his investigation into themes of identity in today’s interconnected world. He uses his own body to represent the conflicting and converging streams of influence from the myriad sources that we encounter every day. After the performance Okach describes how the work was created and answers audience questions.
