Say what you will about film students, but they exemplify the spirit of independent filmmaking. They contend with down-to-the-bone budgets, collaborate with equally self-sacrificing peers, snare locations on the fly (typically sans permits), direct inexperienced actors, and pull all-nighters obsessing over every edit. And out of that whirlwind, they usually produce pieces of (dare we say it) art that entertain and move strangers in the dark. So welcome, stranger, to the City Shorts Student Film Festival, which screens the best efforts from the future David Finchers at the City College cinema department. Watching student films is no longer the awkward ordeal it once was, thanks to affordable, high-quality digital cameras and graphics programs that lend every project a veneer of craft and professionalism. But the real appeal, then as now, is seeing the gems of creativity and resourcefulness produced by unknown filmmakers with way more talent than money.
