The Fiery Furnaces are always on a trip. Siblings Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger made a weird career out of deconstructing rock into precious nuggets of delirious blues, ambling folk, and cute piano-pop, then assembling those pieces into jigsawlike songs that float along at their own logic. Lyrics, usually sung by Eleanor, explore the fantastical and the mundane — leaving tropical islands and lousy lovers — with emphasis on random detail and repetition. The band's live shows shake the puzzle even further by mashing sections of different songs together, which works better for them than you might imagine. The current tour finds Matthew and Eleanor playing solo, with just piano and guitar, further cutting up postcards from their ongoing musical voyage. Also, there will be a karaoke break — what? — so abandon your expectations when the Fiery Furnaces perform on Wednesday, May 18, at Cafe Du Nord. 9 p.m., $20; www.cafedunord.com.
