Pete Holmes got his break as one of the pop culture-savvy talking heads on VH1’s Best Week Ever, a charity foundation established to support comedians whose careers are either on the ascent or descent. Thanks to winning appearances on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and Conan, and the ubiquity afforded by voicing the e*trade baby, Holmes’ career is clearly on the ascent. He’s entering the big leagues with this appearance, where he’s recording his first full-length CD for Comedy Central Records. He is a sort of Renaissance man of contemporary comedy, appearing on TV and various places on the Internet while also contributing cartoons to the august pages of The New Yorker. Always straddling that high-low line, Holmes is also a writer for NBC’s Outsourced, though we’ll forgive him that — everyone has a skeleton or two in the closet. Despite his multimedia success, he’s still most at home on the stage. There’s a goofy, affable quality to his standup persona that suits his comedic style: observational bits infused with a low-key surreal quality. That can be credited to his improv roots, which are evident in his loose, anything-goes approach. But even though Holmes has a light touch and a laid-back charm, his probing observations on contemporary life reveal a sharp wit behind the easygoing demeanor.
