Dancers aren’t known for their smarts, which is bad and wrong. (Did one of our teachers call us “dancer dumb” when we were in high school, and are we not over it yet? Yes. But anyway.) Here’s an example of why it’s bad and wrong: One of the many intelligent dance companies in the Bay Area, the Embodiment Project, not only interrogates racial prejudice, but it also brings live music and street styles into its performances. Case in point: Of Her Rib, featuring ballet and popping, a live score with jazz singer Valerie Troutt, and contributions from funk band the Elevaters and hip-hop dance group Mix’d Ingrdnts. The subject matter is complex, the dancers are rigorously trained, and the director is young choreographer Nicole Klaymoon.
