How Do They Do That?!
Busby Berkeley’s habit of making kaleidoscopic patterns out of hundreds of legs, Japanese bunraku puppet theater traditions, and old-fashioned cheerleading tricks all get a workout at The Experience of Flight in Dreams. Garrett and Moulton Productions, using the abovementioned — the magic of many limbs pointing in the same direction, the pragmatic agreement between performers and audience that yes, you can see us, but does it really ruin the illusion? And of course, the severe athleticism and control that allows people to flip each other all over the place — sculpt a group of nondancers into a half-backdrop, half-Greek-chorus behind the insanely talented featured dancers. It all leads to “Oh thank you, universe!” moments such as a woman walking on top of a row of prone bodies, stepping carefully from butt to butt and then walking up the side of the man standing at the end of them.
