Young Widows laid down their third LP, In and Out of Youth and Lightness, in the still-in-use Ratterman Funeral Home in the band's hometown of Louisville, Ky. Good luck finding a better pairing of band and recording venue than that. Young Widows' name aside, what makes this union so perfect is the perpetually dire quality of the three-piece's noisy rock, which sounds as if it's always contemplating what things will feel like once a human body's beauty and promise have been snatched away. On In and Out's "Young Rivers," Evan Patterson chants, "Young rivers of mud are overflowing with a new kind of/Undone love" like the most patient of doomsday sayers. If it were possible to rent out Hades, we'd know the ideal studio for their next record.
