Live From Studio Z

On any number of Saturdays over your entire life, watching TV past midnight, you might have thought, “Why does this suck so bad?” It sucks so bad because Saturday Night Live has only one week to write and rehearse every show. As Lorne Michaels has said, “The show doesn’t go on because it’s ready; it goes on because it’s 11:30.” But also during those 36 seasons, you probably saw brilliant, high-wire sketch comedy as well, because creative pressure-cookers can create brilliant comedy meat, such as Will Ferrell sans most of his clothes. That’s the hope behind sketch night KMLZ, created by Killing My Lobster and Z Space, which is taking the one-week-only rules of SNLand presenting ... well, who knows what. That’s what they’re figuring out. Killing My Lobster has its A team in a room right now, including famed playwright Peter Sinn Nachtrieb and co-founder Paul Charney, along with indie-folk band the Bengsons and KFOG Morning Show host Peter Finch. Depending when you’re reading this, the mood in the room could be anywhere from staggeringly hopeless to cautiously optimistic to totally drunk. By showtime, we’re sure it’ll be buoyant, confident – and still a little drunk.
