Although Sandra Bernhard is touring under the banner of her new comedy album, I Love Being Me, Don’t You?, we don’t think we’re going to hear any of the same jokes. For one, the performer, known for riffing on whatever once she hits the stage, riffed on whatever when she hit that stage (the album was recorded at the Castro Theatre in 2010), and if we know anything about comedy, it’s that an improvisational performer doing a straight performance of an improvised album will blow a hole through the lodge seats. So, not many of the same jokes, although we’re sure she’ll do the one about Angelina Jolie in Salt, because then she can say this again: “Her tits are loaded, her pussy’s shooting out rockets, shit be craaaazy.” She probably won’t do the one in which she ripped on our local Rrazz Room (“That fucking gig put me in the rears”), because that was a little harsh -— sorry, Rrazz Room, we’re just the messenger (track three, five minutes in). Ultimately, though, we don’t think the show will match the album because it’s Pride Week. For an improvisational performer with a loyal gay audience, two nights during Pride Week is like a blank, perfumed check. She won’t even have to play it for the few straights in the crowd, because those straights will be happily waving her off, even if they don’t always understand the subtext.
