Hughes, Hurston, Smith, Yum!

The political and economic landscape of late could make any thinking, feeling human wish for another time, even one fraught with its own issues. Live one of your anachronistic reveries in the throes of tonight’s Queer Rebels of the Harlem Renaissance, a multimedia evening of entertainment honoring and interpreting an era known as much for its bawdiness as its intellectualism. An impressive range of queer black performers is on hand to thrill you. Among them is captivating spoken-word artist Kirya Traber, a Sister Spit alum and published writer. Also see Brontez Purnell, whom you may know from his nasty antics with party band Gravy Train!!! and newer venture Younger Lovers. His experimental jazz ensemble, Brontez Purnell Dance, recently performed at the Berkeley Art Museum and proved there is so much more greatness from this already impressively talented artist to come, and people, you don’t want to miss any steps along the way. F. “B.J.” Browne brings fierce piano, Griot Noir uses poetry and movement, and tons more. You’ll not only get a break from your own insanity, you’ll get a lot of bang for your buck.
Fridays, Saturdays, 7 p.m. Starts: July 1. Continues through July 2, 2011
