Bigger Than Ever

Some artists make large-scale art for dubious reasons, including egomania as well as the continued and maddening presence, despite a steadfast regimen of creams and capsules and grooming techniques, of a small thingie. Those who create small art, however, have purer and nobler motives: They produce tiny slices of wonder while leaving plenty of room on the wall for their friends, such as the 40-strong who appear in the group show “Small.” For those who haven’t yet witnessed the work of the artists with developmental disabilities at this gallery, here’s your wake-up call: The show contains more than 100 pieces, none bigger than 7 inches across, in many styles: painting, ceramics, drawing, mixed media. Curator Will Skinker calls walking through the gallery a “magical experience” and compares it to a treasure hunt: “Everywhere you look there is a new gem to feast your eyes upon … a tiny masterpiece giving you a glimpse into the interworking of the whole.” Although finding a common thread in such a large small show may prove impossible, consider the work of James Miles: He has included wee representations of eight massive international museums, cutting them down to size in more ways than one (just imagine how little that floor-to-ceiling Anselm Kiefer is now).
