It's always a gamble for a young band to embrace a sense of weirdness. Balance the elements and you've got a product with a lot of personality; get the formula wrong and you may struggle to find an audience. Maus Haus' "Rigid Breakfast" tilts the S.F. band toward the former. The opening track from its 2008 debut, Lark Marvels, includes Gary Numan-esque synth; squiggling, spazzy effects; perky "bah-bah-bah-bah" chanting; and word salad lyrics that grow less foggier the more you listen to them ("Hit you with my fingers crossed/the awkward glance in your direction/What you see is what you get and/disobey your rigid breakfast"). With songs like this, it seems Maus Haus' experimental potpourri could really go places.
