Web comics are often overlooked by the art cognoscenti. The reason is clear: The cognoscenti like to move about the world looking at art, on walls or train cars, in galleries or lofts, among their own kind, talking smack. The Web is best for anonymous chat, Gilt, and Terry Richardson’s Diary, to the cognoscenti. Which is a shame, because what they fail to notice is that the people who create Web comics do so because they need to — no, they have to — make art. Many times a week, sometimes every day, largely in serial form. They’re exactly the sort of artists that we (er, the cognoscenti) should be paying attention to, and finally, a gallery has brought the mountain to us, in the form of “We Love Webcomics.” In this group show, 12 artists hang multiple prints on physical walls, allowing us to process their work in the last-century way we will never give up. But one look at John Allison’s heartbreaking Bad Machinerystrip and you’ll want to know more — good thing there’s nearly two years of it on his site (and another 10 years of his other strips). The styles in the exhibit range nicely, from simple squiggle drawings to slick cartoon-pop — and, is that watercolor, Scott Campbell? After the show, check out the artists’ sites for the humbling realization that comics are but a fraction of their total art output. These people produce. It’s time we took notice.
