You music geeks probably know of something called “air checks” – hourlong segments of radio broadcasts recorded for no other reason than to freeze the moments in time. If you've heard one, you know they can be chilling. Nostalgic they're not. One can take you right back to, say, high school in 1983. You hear familiar “oldies” (that were quite new) as well as songs you'd probably never hear again. You're bombarded with subtle things – ads for places long gone, voices of DJs that reflect the attitudes and language of the day, and references to events that may as well never have happened. It's all so matter-of-fact, so unintentional. Michael Jang has created a photographic air check as part of an exhibit called “Passage: Capturing Movement.” In 1983, a Bay Area television station had an opening for someone to report the weather, and Jang's job was to shoot the applicants' portraits. Almost 100 people showed up – all aiming to look like TV material, complete with geometric hairdos, wide lapels, dramatic mustaches, and great big eyeglasses. The only thing they're missing is any sense of comic irony or postmodern disdain. Jang has arranged their images on a digital screen inside the body of an old Macintosh so they rotate. (We dare you to try an look at only a couple and then keep walking.) Jang is joined in the exhibit by Stephen Mallon, David Magnusson, Steve Bird, Anne Terpstra, and David King, all of whose work explores themes of movement in space or time.
