Abby Normal

When we first heard about Abigail, the rock opera about the Salem witch trials, we thought, This isn’t already a thing? GTFO! Then we remembered we think that about every theater piece — or most everything, actually — because what endeavor wouldn’t benefit from waves of overblown guitar and fist-raised scream-singing? We’re surprised that Jesus, hippies, assorted transpeople, and a guy playing pinball have the genre locked. For their part, the witch trials are tremendously suited to the rock opera treatment because of all the Puritans, darkness, black clothes, Christianity, Satanism, hangings, and witches, all of which require the sustained presence of power chords, as any heavy-lidded Sacto longhair will lecture upon. Not to mention the fact that the production is the work of the people behind successful locals runs of rock operas since 1998, including Jesus Christ Superstar, Tommy, Rocky Horror, and Pink Floyd: The Wall. You’re in good, bloody hands with this one.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: Aug. 18. Continues through Aug. 27, 2011
