Singer-songwriter Richard Buckner is something of a nomad, but his journey(s) began in San Francisco. In the early '90s Buckner fronted the rather good Doubters, one of several S.F. bands at the time (including The Buckets, Stephen Yerkey, Swingin' Doors) that could've borne the tag "alt-country" or "Americana," but were a tad ahead of the curve. Going solo in '94, Buckner has amassed a formidable catalog of haunting songs somewhere between the parched storytelling of Texas country/folk icons Butch Hancock and Guy Clark and the edgy desolation of Mark Eitzel. His newest, Our Blood (Merge), featuring Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley and New Riders of the Purple Sage pedal steel ace Buddy Cage, is out this summer.
