Coincidentally, the late Gram Parsons is of the Order of 27, the age at which he, Amy Winehouse, and Kurt Cobain departed this mortal coil. He didn't quite invent country-rock, but he was among the first to combine the two, around 1966-'68, and put the resulting style on the cultural map. Joining the Byrds, he inspired their iconic Sweetheart of the Rodeo album; he also cofounded the Flying Burrito Brothers, and his friendship with Keith Richards resulted in his influencing the Rolling Stones. While Parsons didn't sell many records in his lifetime, his legacy reverberates in performers diverse as the Mekons, Emmylou Harris (who sang with Parsons), the Eagles, Uncle Tupelo, and Elvis Costello.
