Fans of gritty S.F. rockers Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, and Sic Alps better get to know this name: Mikal Cronin. A longtime collaborator of Segall's — and the dark-haired dude who plays bass in his band, as well as Moonhearts — he recently released his own self-titled debut on Trouble in Mind records. It's familiar, but enjoyable: Cronin finds the same blowing-up-in-your face guitar tone and grunge vibes beloved by Segall, but leaves the edges of his pop songs a little more frayed. "Apathy," the album's first single, sounds like it could have ruled alt-rock radio in the mid-'90s, with its stop-start dynamics and endlessly repeated chorus. Like his pals, Cronin goes weird, too: the opening track features a meandering flute solo played by Thee Oh Sees' John Dwyer.
