More About

The Radar Reading Series wants to give you a cookie and strain your brain. Organizer (and occasional contributor to SF Weekly’s arts and culture blog, the Exhibitionist) Michelle Tea is an underground queer literary icon, as uncompromising in her support of independent artists as she is prolific and hardworking. Her novel Valenciabecame a defining narrative for young, punk-influenced queer women, and made the Mission District famous as a mecca for lesbians, transgender people, and the poor-yet-clothing-obsessed; it’s soon to become a multidirector film project. So when she bakes cookies, with her own hands, in her own oven, brings them to the library, and offers them to people who ask questions of the readers who’ve just performed, it’s fucking special and magical. The range of queer and queer-friendly readers, artists, filmmakers, and more that Tea curates would be amazing even if it hadn’t been taking place since 2003, but as it is the series can be described only as a pegacorn — we can hardly believe it exists, but we know in our hearts it does, and anyone can depend on it for inspiration. The Dec. 13 reading includes Amra Brooks, Greg Youmans, Fauxnique, and Priscilla Lee. On Jan. 11 it's Joshua Mohr, Bill Basquin, Ishmael and Tennessee Reed, and Alice Bag
Wed., Sept. 7, 6 p.m.; Thu., Nov. 17, 6 p.m.; Tue., Dec. 13, 6 p.m., 2011
