• Lauryn Hill might have delivered the encore of the summer at the Rock the Bells hip-hop festival this weekend: After performing all of her 1998 debut, she came back to do a bunch of great old Fugees songs. She even brought Nas out. Those who headed for the exits early missed out.

• Jeffrey Paradise and the organizers of Blow Up Forever might have thrown the best 18+ party in years. With Glass Candy, Drop the Lime, Amen Brother, and other great acts on several stages, the floors were full and raging. There was even a raver kid dancing off with a B-girl — amazing.

• Sonoma's own Tom Waits released a new song, "Bad As Me," the first track from his forthcoming album of the same name. It's his first new record in seven years, but it has the same wolfish growling and nightmare-blues vibe as his best work.

Fizzle

• Kreayshawn came back to her native city to play at Slim's for the first time since signing a major-label deal and becoming a household name. Her live show needs lots of work: Onstage, she looked a little weak and even bored, wearing a fishnet blouse that made a big deal of her midriff. The 21-year-old Kreayshawn later suffered an apparent Twitter-hacking after hosting the "black carpet" prelude to the MTV Video Music Awards, when someone posted nude photos of her online — ones she says were taken while she was underage.

• Steve Jobs announced that he's stepping down as CEO of Apple, which — no matter how it affects the company — means the end of a glorious era for music fans. Jobs helped create the iPod, the iTunes store, the iPhone, and the iPad, all of which have had a major impact on music. We'll miss the "Stevenote" product intros at Apple conferences, too.

• How not to behave: Start a fight with a major critic after they ask you a simple question. That's what L.A. emcee Game did when Andrew Nosnitsky asked for his thoughts on Berkeley maverick Lil B. "Fuck you and Lil B. Eat a dick," Game signed off an MTV interview, giving everyone yet another good reason to dislike him.
