Minneapolis is a bountiful locale for punk rock, supplying the world with the likes of the Replacements, Dillinger Four, Off with Their Heads, and Hüsker Dü. The Soviettes are another one of the city's punk treasures, albeit a lesser-known one. The band, three women with equally striking singing voices and a male drummer with a cartoony squawk of a shout, plays pop-punk without falling prey to the disposable silliness that so often accompanies the subgenre. The Soviettes have addressed a whole mess of subjects — patriarchy, rumor mills, sly political tactics, kick-ass roller girls — while managing to consistently crank out entertaining hooks. After releasing three LPs named, appropriately enough, LP, LPII, and LPIII, the group went on hiatus in 2005, but a handful of recent reunion shows indicates that there still might be life in this feisty, underappreciated outfit yet.
