Man Up

Perhaps you’ve been there: You’re at your girlfriend’s parents’ house, unexpectedly in charge of the grill, incinerating everything that comes near it, and you say something stupid — I was too busy listening to the Pixies to learn to grill! Her father is silent, gazing at the box hedge with dead eyes. Trompe le Monde ... ? It seems you have failed, young artiste, in the most important thing that all men must know when they are around other men, especially fathers: how to man the fire. At least you know how to play poker, so you won’t be saying, “Actually, I have no idea whatsoever how to play poker” to her dad later that night, which would knock the highball right out of his hand. Fortunately, if you are negligent in the manly arts, the Distilled Man’s classes will have you not only grilling steak saignant and expertly riding the poker river or whatever, but also holding court in the wine aisle and speaking about scotch with an accent and a sheepdog. These are man classes, for everyone with man-knowledge deficiencies. They are “Campfire Guitar for Non-Musicians” (Sept. 12), “Scotch: The History, the Taste, and the Mystique” (Sept. 8), “Essentials of Grilling” (Sept. 11), “Introduction to Poker” (Sept. 14), and “A Gentleman’s Introduction to Wine” (Sept. 29). Remember: It’s never too late to learn this stuff. It’s just sort of sad.
Thu., Sept. 8; Sun., Sept. 11; Mon., Sept. 12, 7 p.m.; Wed., Sept. 14; Thu., Sept. 29, 2011
