More About
Unlike certain other bands that sprang from the early '90s scene at Berkeley's 924 Gilman, Rancid hasn't spent the last few years overseeing an award-winning Broadway musical based on its last album. For the band's die-hard fans, however — and there are plenty — turning out earnest, hook-heavy, ska-infused punk music is far more important. The quartet, which turns 20 this year, rarely disappoints in that regard. By its seventh album, 2009's solid Let the Dominoes Fall, it was getting tough to buy the fortysomething musicians as anti-authoritarian street punks anymore, but Tim Armstrong's sweet, raspy drawl and Matt Freeman's tireless bass riffs don't seem to be aging — which is encouraging, as a new record is due out in 2012. Live, the East Bay natives still inspire a serious (and for many, seriously nostalgic) mosh pit.
