More About
Marcus Shelby is a great composer. He's a heavy-duty jazz bass player, a music historian, and an engaged political thinker; he's a sharp-dressed handsome bandleader who's held many a San Francisco audience rapt and happy. You probably already know all this if you live in the Bay Area, but did you know Shelby loves children? At "Bebop Playin' the Changes," he discusses Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and more in a musical lecture (part of SFJAZZ's Family Matinee series) geared for elementary-schoolers. We've heard him give historical lectures in small, rowdy bars before, and if he can handle loud-talking, flirting, drinking adults that well, we figure he's going to have the kids rapt and happy.
