More About

Marcus Shelby is a great composer. He's a heavy-duty jazz bass player, a music historian, and an engaged political thinker; he's a sharp-dressed handsome bandleader who's held many a San Francisco audience rapt and happy. You probably already know all this if you live in the Bay Area, but did you know Shelby loves children? At "Bebop — Playin' the Changes," he discusses Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and more in a musical lecture (part of SFJAZZ's Family Matinee series) geared for elementary-schoolers. We've heard him give historical lectures in small, rowdy bars before, and if he can handle loud-talking, flirting, drinking adults that well, we figure he's going to have the kids rapt and happy.
