When infantryman McKinley Nolan went AWOL in Vietnam in the late 1960s, a number of rumors circulated to explain his vanishing act. He was captured by the Viet Cong, according to one story, while another had him slipping into Cambodia, marrying a local woman, and conveniently forgetting his wife and son in Texas. Henry Corras haunting documentary, The Disappearance of McKinley Nolan, accompanies the GIs stalwart brother Michael through the jungles and villages of Southeast Asia on a noble expedition to get behind the decades-old veil of mystery. Todays bevy of shows, with the director present for the evening screenings, is part of the inaugural month of arthouse programming at the San Francisco Film Societys new year-round theater. SFFS celebrates the venues opening with free sake and short films on Sept. 22, but the toasts will be bittersweet: The societys executive director Graham Leggat died Aug. 25.
