Suzanne Took Us Down

The last time we saw the all-male a capella Leonard Cohen choir, the musical director of the Conspiracy of Beards lost his patience with amplification. At his gesture, the large group of suit-and-hat-wearing men calmly stepped from the stage onto the floor, surrounding their own audience. That’s how we came to be standing next to a woman we’d never met, who was named Suzanne after the song “Suzanne,” clutching her hand and weeping with her as the choir sang its signature four-part version of “Suzanne” directly into our blissed-out brain pans. The whole experience means we anticipate the group’s performance at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass for reasons of local pride (What if Emmylou Harris hears them!?), as well as curiosity about amplification, and regular old blissed-out fandom.
