Reach for the Sky

If the moon and the West Coast had a baby, it would be Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound. Once you get over the length of the name, you'll have no problem enjoying this psychedelic San Francisco rock band. Often compared to Pink Floyd or the Byrds, AHISS has set itself apart with a celestial sound — an aural jambalaya, if you will. Frontman Charley Saufley started the band with an untamed, heavy stoner vibe. With him was guitarist and bassist Jefferson Marshall as well as drummer Michael Lardas. Charley's sister, Camilla Saufley, who plays keyboard and flute, joined later and AHISS began experimenting — starting minimally at the beginning of songs and swarming into a cosmic wall of sound. After being signed to TeePee Records in 2006 and releasing When Sweet Sleep Returned in 2009, engineering expert Tim Green guided the band down a more melodic route. Brett Constantino and Evan Reese from San Francisco's Sleepy Sun gracefully contribute to the harmonies for the song "Two Birds." However, after three albums, AHISS is still looking for ways to change up its sound. Whatever it might be, expect something good.
