A sculptor friend of ours created a work called Migraine. She painted a cosmetologist’s dummy head like a human head, but on the left side she added a black-and-white explosion that resembles visual static on a video monitor. She drove in two six-inch nails — one in the left eye, one in the temple. This resonates with us and probably anyone who suffers from migraines. The headaches can be intensely painful, and also block vision. They’re known to affect balance and disrupt the ability to concentrate. Some people experience nausea as well as extreme light-sensitivity. A migraine can last as long as two days. Triggers are manifold — including stress, exercise, loud noise, and certain foods — and there’s still a great deal medical science doesn’t know about the disorder. Today’s Miles for Migraine aims to remedy that. It’s a 10k/5k run and two-mile walk started in 2008 by a woman named Eileen Jones, who has experienced migraines for more than two decades and still suffers chronic pain, despite attention from neurologists and practitioners of alternative medicine. Last year the event raised $10,000 for the UCSF Headache Center for research into what causes migraines. “Building knowledge,” says Peter Goadsby, director of the center, “is a guarantee of better treatments in the future.” The Miles for Migraine logo is a little brain with legs, wearing sunglasses and athletic shoes. We like that much better than six-inch nails to the face.
