Perry's Fantasy Land
Texas' governor can't have it both ways: A good, comprehensive, and insightful observation of a 'I'll do anything to stay in power' kind of guy ["Miracle Faker," Jim Schutze, feature, 10/5]. When Rick Perry was a Democrat he had a soul, but apparently selling his soul is the price he had to pay when he became a Republican. As a Christian, I find his ethics self-serving and situationally convenient. He either believes in the doctrine of Jesus Christ, which includes Matthew 22:21, "So give back to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's," or not. He can't have it both ways.

A Return to Canvassing
Nonprofits must profit from GCI: If Grassroots Campaign Inc.'s canvassing is so bad for these reputable and effective charities, why do these charities continue hiring GCI ["Gross Profit," Taylor Friedman, feature, 9/28]? I suppose the answer is the charities know there is a long-term revenue stream created through monthly donors signed up on the street, and they also place value on in-person, face-to-face education and the building of name recognition. It seems the article's author misses these major points.

It's a job, not a mission: When I encounter the young solicitors, they are usually so engaging, and I would like to believe everything they say is true, but my gut instinct does not agree. Sometimes I will let them say their piece, then smile and explain that I just don't have any extra at this time. It's my belief that they are simply trying to make a little money and if they had a choice, they wouldn't be doing this for a living. As for those behind the scenes, I hope and wish they have good intentions.

Movie about punk rock parents serves as a larger message: This [film] applies to any alternative lifestyle, not just punks ["Why Punk Rockers Make Great Parents," Rae Alexandra, All Shook Down, 9/30]. My son had someone judge him because of us and when he was upset, I just told him that people that are ignorant (without knowledge about a subject) are usually scared, and lash out because they are frightened by something they don't know about. This applies to people that are unfamiliar with people with disabilities, different races, religions, etc. I stand by the statement "knowledge is power."

Angling for a burger and fries: Congratulations, San Francisco ["Umami Burger is Coming! Umami Burger is Coming! But Is it Any Good?" Laura Beck, SFoodie, 10/3]. The city's getting a Umami Burger at the same time as Orange County. (Anaheim: secret den of hipsters, or misguided demographic research?) The burgers aren't bad — but what really makes me flip for this place [sarcasm heavily intended] is the way they stack the fries. Oh, man I must have a right-angle fetish.
