Monica Canilao’s paintings and drawings have a warm, stick-like quality. She sometimes works in “woodburn” on oak panel and renders images of trees. That’s thrice stick-like; she’s amazing like that. We adore “Weapon Chicken” with its phoenix-oh-wait-it’s-just-a-majestic-hen anchoring many small ghostly things, based on a wide interpretation of the term “weapon.” Brass knuckles are in there, sure, but so is the kitty from the “Hang in There!” poster. Canilao is one of many artists participating in “Passport,” a mini art collection in the form of a stamp-getting art walk and afterparty. This year marks the third time the SF Arts Commission has put on this neighborhood-specific event, and it features a fun three-block walk around the cute Castro and a little book in your hand for 12 hot artists (including Dan Nicoletta, James Gobel, John Chiara) to imprint with their original work. We expect at least one stamp to have a warm, stick-like quality.
