More About

Collages of smaller images that create patterns (think of Chuck Close's portraits) have been popular for years, but Kirkman Amyx pushes the concept someplace new with his series "Basic Cable." For five straight days, Amyx took photographs of different TV channels (including MTV, FOX, PBS, and the Home Shopping Network); then he put the photos in long grids, where each tiny slot has five overlapping photos of whatever aired the same minute of each day. "Basic Cable" is a welcome sociological overview and an enthralling art project. FOX Network, for example, has images of conservative politicians, die-hard religious figures, and talk-show blowhards like Maury Povich all bumping up against each other like mirages emerging from the same horizon. Amyx applies his patterns-of-time motif to outdoor spaces elsewhere in the exhibit. By reducing life to stamp-sized quadrants, Amyx gives us a big-picture perspective that's both enjoyable to dissect and (even in the case of FOX) beautiful to behold.
