Berlin-by-way-of-Stockholm producer Axel Willner records and performs as the Field, creating ambiance-swathed, Krautrock-influenced tech-house. But Willner doesn't play the field; he's a serial monogamist. Augmented by drummer Jesper Skarin and mix engineer Jörg Burger, Willner is all about romancing an elongated rhythm, not building a quick, climax-obsessed banger. Recording his third full-length Looping State of Mind in Cologne, Germany, home to his label Kompakt, Willner has again exhibited his ability to flirt with samples from his record collection and tease melodic shivers from live recordings, braiding the two into a cosmic disco yearning that borrows from both deep house and post-punk. The rewards here are in the warm, organic pulses and Willner's methodical shifts in texture and emotional resonance.
