You’re walking home on a clear night and see the most glorious, gigantic full moon. Quickly, you reach for your cell phone or camera to take a picture. And from this vision of the massive, bright, beautiful natural satellite — you get a washed-out blob, surrounded by blackness. So much for capturing the moment. But there are people who do this right. Since 1991, a Bay Area photographers group called the Nocturnes have perfected the art of getting clear images after dark, and their results are by turns calming and harrowing. By using exposures lasting a few seconds to as long as eight hours, their otherworldly images portray the places we see at night as dead-still mystical settings where every detail is visible. See such works at the "Nocturnes 20th Anniversary Photography Exhibit." Subjects include landscapes and seascapes (such as the ruins of the Sutro Baths) as well as buildings and other structures. You might even talk to some of the Nocturnes and learn how to perfect that full-moon shot.
Tuesdays-Thursdays, Saturdays. Starts: Nov. 16. Continues through Dec. 3, 2011
