It’s an unlikely — but nonetheless possible — scenario to wake up in a low-rent motel on the dusty outskirts of Las Vegas with a hangover and a hot partner you don’t recall marrying (or screwing, presumably) the night before. In the movies, of course, this sticky dream inevitably turns into a shrieking nightmare in the blink of an eye — or the spin of a steering wheel, as in the case of Thomas Jane’s guilty, ambitious pleasure, Dark Country, where a honeymooning couple swerves to miss something in the road that ends up not leaving them alone. Doubling as director and star, Jane shows and shares his love for the fateful seductions of film noir. This applies equally to his disdain, lest we forget, for the Great American Lie of open-road freedom. Doubling the raw pleasure of a rare 3-D screening of the 2009 film, Jane takes the stage afterward for a smart-guy conversation with Film Noir Foundation mastermind Eddie Muller. Their chat will be filmed — in 3-D! — and included in the forthcoming DVD release. If you can’t find the time for a sleazy Vegas getaway, this combo of lusty high jinks and savvy movie-talk is the next best thing.
