Not only does “Ladies in Waiting”contain No Nude Men (the latter being a theater company), it also -- in contrast to much of the theater that gets produced today -- has many interesting women. The production’s three short plays, written by Hilde Susan Jaegtnes, Alison Luterman, and Claire Rice, all retell stories of women in peril. Yet as Stuart Bousel, one of the show’s three directors, says, “thematically they’re all linked, but stylistically they couldn’t be more different.” In Woman Come Down, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood debate whether traditional and nontraditional lifestyles equally entrap women; in Night in Jail, a drunk driver and the ghost of Marie Antoinette lament their parallel fates. In a third -- an untitled absurdist farce -- manly men who work on an oil rig get terrorized by weepy, nightgown-clad mermaid virgins. In a theater world that, for all its touting of progressive values, still doesn’t offer female artists opportunities comparable to those men get, a production written by three women, directed by two, and starring five is a refreshing departure from rhetoric over action. And the token men aren't even required to get naked.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: Dec. 2. Continues through Dec. 17, 2011
