Rant: Those Ignorant of '60s Lore Are Doomed to Tedious Lectures

Ranter: Tall, 60-ish guy wearing a fedora

Location: Slim's

Date: A recent Wednesday night

Topics Covered: The web of life; the early success of Dino Valenti; the importance of networking; '60s excesses; the importance of a contextual understanding of David Crosby; why those possessed of ignorance should not feel insulted.

[Waiting for a show to start, the fedora-sporting fellow lectures his companion, a short woman in her mid-30s.]

Fedora Fellow: There's these points of connection, and then there's something like string, something that connects everybody who was part of something. That's why it's good to be part of something. You're tied in. It's like Dino from Quicksilver.

[She speaks into his ear.]

Quicksilver Messenger Service. I'll burn you a mix. Dino Valenti used to live on a houseboat with David Crosby. Then, when he wrote his first big single — "Get Together," you know it?

[She doesn't.]

The Youngbloods did it. Surely you know them.

[She doesn't.]

You'll love them. Anyway, Dino lived with Crosby on a houseboat out by Sausalito. Then this L.A. producer, Paul Rothchild, came to the boat looking for Dino, and he found David and everybody else playing their music and smoking aspirin and just being connected. Rothchild then helped put together Crosby, Stills, & Nash, and he produced their very first record! That's what connection is. He followed the string to Dino, and he got all this other string, too, and he gave it to the world.

[She speaks.]

Yes, that's David Crosby. Have you heard —

[She speaks.]

Yes, aspirin. But what matters is the interconnectedness, which is why you need to hear this music. To connect to it, too.

[She speaks.]

David Crosby is not just this wreck you think of.

[She speaks.]

If you don't have the facts, you're just making assumptions. You are in a position of ignorance —

[She speaks.]

Not ignorant. Ignorance.

[She speaks.]

No, it isn't. Ignorance is a state. It's ignorant that's the insult.

[She storms toward the bar. He sputters, looks around him for support from eavesdroppers, and then sucks on his beer.]

Jesus.
