Dinosaur Jr.: Show Preview

Even Dinosaur Jr. singer/guitarist J Mascis will admit that 1988's Bug isn't his favorite of the band's original albums — he prefers You're Living All Over Me, and for good reason. But if Bug did arrive just after the Amherst, Mass., indie-rock trio's creative peak, it's still packed with memorable, delirious sludge-pop: On its best songs, like "Freak Scene" and "Budge," Mascis' overheated guitar riffs spill over urgently, their sonic dominance challenged only by the groaning heft of Lou Barlow's bass. Bug also feels a bit more deliberate than its predecessor — the vocals stand high above the bristling din of the instruments, and many of the songs are more tightly structured. So hearing this notoriously loud live band perform all of Bug will definitely be a treat — especially since Dino pal Henry Rollins will be interviewing the slacker-rock icons onstage before they play.
