Though probably best known as an integral part of the lurching, corrosive juggernaut the Jesus Lizard, singer David Yow and bassist David William Sims arguably exerted more influence with the artful dissonance of pioneering '80s noise-punk outfit Scratch Acid. Rounded out by guitarist Brett Bradford and drummer Rey Washam (later a member of such bands as Rapeman and Ministry), the Austin-based crew mixed Yow's deranged Bad Lieutenant-with-a-mic delivery and violent grooves with flashes of eerie gothic melancholy. The quartet only issued a pair of EPs and one full-length during its five-year existence, but you can find out why Scratch Acid was hailed by such notables as the late Kurt Cobain and Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil when the reunited group hits the Fillmore.
