Not a lot of people know it, but ancient Greek gymnasiums contained libraries. That's because the Greeks -- ever in search of the divine ideal -- saw intellectual and aesthetic "fitness" going hand-in-hand with athletic fitness. If these ancients were to see today's Western society, they'd be puzzled that professional athletes weren't intellectually savvy, and that high-level academics didn't excel in the sporting arena. Believe it or not, this has something to do with roller disco. Let us explain. In Xanadu, a struggling artist called Sonny is visited by a Greek muse named Kira. The muse (in the form of an earthly woman named Clio) helps Sonny realize that his ultimate purpose in life is to realize this Greek ideal by opening a roller disco hall -- where people can revel in aesthetic and athletic prowess simultaneously. But of course this is a drama, so Clio/Kira falls in love with Sonny, which is forbidden among extra-worldly muses, and she risks being banished to the underworld. And this production also happens to be part parody, so there's lots of tongue-in-cheek back-and-forth, some uber-villains, a pack of roller disco divas, and probably a number of references to the 1980 film by the same name starring Olivia Newton-John and Michael Beck. Roll on, Sonny and Kira. We know you'll make it.
