Prior to its 2006 premier, the online buzz for Snakes on a Plane was so loud that New Line Cinema sent the crew back into production to add violence and vulgarity, for the cinesters who had already been making fan-fiction, trailers, songs, and poster art in its name. The most imperative addition was Samuel L. Jackson’s line, “I have had it with these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane!” which was first heard in a 2005 parody created by two guys goofing off at their audiobook job. Weirdly, ticket sales for the movie didn’t reflect the hype. Seems people liked the ideaof Jackson trapped in the air with man-eating vipers more than they liked paying to see it. Nonetheless, a 405-page novelization, a DC Comics adaptation, and an illustrated history of the phenomenon followed. When censors reworked the script for television the resulting homophone, “I have had it with these monkey-fighting snakes on a Monday-to-Friday plane!” became an instant Internet meme, resulting in a Colbert report and, yes, a T-shirt. So it was only a matter of time before Snakes on a Plane was honored as the season-opener of Bad Movie Night. Hosts Jim Fourniadis, John Hell, and Alexia Staniotes have been known to do great things with much less; imagine what they will do with 450 snakes and lines like “Time is tissue!”
