Painted Palms might be a full-fledged touring band nowadays, but its tropical-toned, effects-spattered synth-pop originated in a most unassuming way. During a break from school, cousins Christopher Prudhomme and Reese Donohue tried their hand at making music together. The two continued their work after vacation ended, but the collaboration occurred over some 1,800 miles, as Prudhomme was based in Baton Rouge, La., and Donohue in San Francisco. Canopy, the group's debut EP, might have been impossible to assemble without e-mail, phones, and the power of contemporary computers, but the result feels wonderfully removed from modern civilization. "Falling Asleep" makes the titular task sound like the most joyful activity imaginable, and "Water Hymn" is some kind of aural safari, with its electronic melodies enhanced by recordings of the lyrebird and kookaburras. Painted Palms perform with Starfucker on Friday, Jan. 6, at Great American Music Hall and Saturday, Jan. 7, at The Independent.
