Comedy podcasting has become a minor media empire in the past year, with autonomous states ruled by Marc Maron’s WTF with Marc Maron, Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist, and Scott Aukerman’s Earwolfnetwork. All of these comics call Los Angeles their home, and there’s plenty of cross-pollination between the shows’ guests and comedy cohorts. A major hub of this new L.A. comedy scene is Meltdown Comics, the comic book store Hardwick transformed into a stand-up venue and headquarters for Nerdist Industries. The venue’s flagship live show is The Meltdown. It’s hosted by Kumail Nanjiani (of the video game podcast The Indoor Kids) and Hardwick’s Nerdist sidekick Jonah Ray. Nanjiani, who lived in Pakistan until he was 18, brings a unique perspective to his unabashed geekery, as does the Hawaiian-born Ray. For this SF Sketchfest incarnation of The Meltdown, Nanjiani and Ray welcome a roster of guests that includes Steve Agee of The Sarah Silverman Program, former MADtv cast member Matt Braunger, and WTF regular Eddie Pepitone, whose acidic wit and primal yawp express one of our finest contemporary voices of moral and political outrage.
