Launched in 1981, Tom Tom Club started as a side project for husband-and-wife bandmates Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, then best known as the rhythm section of Talking Heads. On their self-titled debut, bassist Weymouth and drummer Frantz counterbalanced their main gig's oblique polyrhythmic loops with an upfront, endearing groove. In line with the era's increasingly less discordant vein of Lower East Side punk-funk experiments, Tom Tom Club's sunny whimsy fed back into the music that influenced it, providing hip-hop with famous breakbeats in songs such as "Genius of Love." Through three decades, Weymouth and Frantz have remained flexible and experimental. Also celebrating more than a quarter century in existence — and with its New Wave-era lineup intact — is English outfit The Fixx, of "One Thing Leads to Another" fame.
