More About

We have become accustomed to images scaled down to fit the little screens in the palms of our hands. The details are indistinguishable unless you expand it, and when you do you can’t see the whole thing, robbing photojournalism of its power. DOUBLEtruck magazine aims to remedy this. The quarterly publication, founded in 2004 by Scott McKiernan, is dedicated to printing compelling images about history as it is made. The title is an industry term that describes a double-page spread, long considered the coup de grace for any photographer, and DOUBLEtruck publishes nothing but. A collection of such images bursts from the magazine’s pages in “Seeing Double — The Best of DOUBLEtruck Magazine,” co-presented by the SF Arts Commission. McKiernan selects photographs from the first five years of DOUBLEtruck for the show, a stretch of time that spans conflict in Iraq, the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, and President Obama’s campaign and election. How appropriate too that the pictures are on display in City Hall, the site of a few thousand historic same-sex weddings back in 2004.
Mondays-Sundays, 5:30 p.m. Starts: Feb. 8. Continues through May 18, 2012
