More About

The annual Mostly British Film Festivalalways saves a couple of seats for movies from English-speaking lands beyond the British Isles. Today Australia accounts for four-fifths of the festival’s mood-shifting schedule. Mrs. Carey’s Concert (noon), the great Bob Connolly’s first documentary in a decade, takes a calm, watchful look at the frenetic lead-up to a girls’ school concert. Little Sparrows (4:45 p.m.), Yu-Hsiu Camille Chen’s intimate feature debut, centers on a dying mother and her three adult daughters. Cultures clash in A Heartbeat Away (2:30 p.m.) when a pub rocker has to take his dad’s place at the head of a small-town marching band, while the aptly named South Solitary (7 p.m.) explores the interplay of relationships at an isolated island lighthouse circa 1928. Day closes with another period piece, Nicolas Roeg and Donald Cammell’s scandalous Performance (9:30 p.m.). It was shot in 1968 with a dapper James Fox and a dissolute Mick Jagger, shelved by Warner Brothers for two years, and eventually embraced as one of the most experimental, philosophical, and influential gangster flicks ever made.
Mondays-Sundays. Starts: Feb. 2. Continues through Feb. 9, 2012
