Seeing a dance choreographed by Holly Johnson is like going to a Tennessee Williams play where the actors have forgotten how to speak and instead deliver their lines through movement. Her latest piece, Want, which has its world premier this weekend, dives into the intense emotions of human relationships -- desire, despair, darkness, longing -- on and around the most everyday of objects: a kitchen table, chairs, a bed. The costumes of the five dancers are banal items such as a shirt and tie, a sundress, a sweater. Yet the dancers’ movements have been called “high velocity,” “high risk,” and “precarious.” (We’d add “damn sexy” and “more than a little bit scary.”) Johnston, director of contemporary dance company Bones and Ledges, knows the body can’t lie. “The body is completely honest,” says Johnston. “It reveals all secrets.” One reviewer said of her work it’s like “turning the body into a dangerous machine.” Johnston knows it was never anything but.
