Sizzle & Fizzle: Highs and Lows from the Last Week in S.F. Music

Sizzle

• To help kick off Noise Pop's 20th Anniversary festival, we're throwing a free party on Thursday, Feb. 9, at the Noise Pop Pop-Up Shop at 34 Page (at Franklin). S.F. rappers the Jealous Guys will be performing a live show; additional sets will come from local bass music producer DJ Dials and YR Skull. The party starts at 6 p.m. — hope to see you there.

• Call it "hipster house" if you want, but Saturday's Haçeteria party brought a fun-loving crowd to Deco Lounge. Headliner Breath Control churned out set of homespun recordings that mixed house beats with chopped-up free-jazz saxophones. There wasn't much elaborate house dancing, but we had a good time anyway.

• We interviewed George Chen, co-founder of Oakland record company Zum, to find out the label's story. Turns out the Zum motto, "By Dint of Obstinacy," was well-earned: Putting out avant-rock records by local artists like High Castle hasn't been easy or lucrative. Chen jokes that "We're too dumb to give up," but he has a habit of understating his own notoriety.

Fizzle

• San Francisco suffered a tragic loss last week when Solomon Kahn, who performed as DJ Solomon, was killed in a car accident in Thailand. Along with working as the house jockey for the Golden State Warriors, Kahn was a top-tier local DJ who had performed in nearly every club in S.F. Kahn was 34 years old and is survived by his fiancée, Nicole Cronin.

• In a juvenile, idiotic, and amusing show of adolescent defiance, M.I.A. briefly flashed her middle finger at the hundreds of millions of Americans who watched her perform during the Super Bowl halftime show. The flip-off sent some observers into a fit of indignation about decency and decorum, which only inflated M.I.A.'s status as fun if a slightly numbskulled provocateur.

• Let's all feel even sorrier for Francis Bean Cobain: According to revelations in a new book, her mother, Courtney Love, is even crazier than we thought: The woman allegedly lives on a cocktail of prescription drugs and cigarettes, let two of Francis Bean's pets die, and spends hours slamming doors and yelling on the phone. No wonder Francis Bean wanted a restraining order against Courtney.

So FBC has had a gender change? Funny, but I thought her name was spelled FrancEs (the feminine form).
