We’d love to know what Jaap Blonk thinks of The Artist, the old-fashioned silent charmer that seduced Academy Awards voters. The improvisation-oriented Dutch performer discovered his voice as a poet and vocalist in the early 1980s, probing the outer limits of avant-garde oral/aural expression for years before extending his musical range to composing electronic scores. As enamored as ever with sounds and syllables, words and phrases, Blonk makes his remarkable pipes the riveting centerpiece of his live shows. He makes two local appearances today as part of a chockablock U.S. tour, beginning with a free midday poetry and vocal performance at S.F. State. Tonight’s gig, Jaap Blonk: Soundtracks, Scores, Interactive Animations, is a high-energy live-cinema show featuring the artist jamming (musically and verbally) to experimental films, such as Man Ray’s Emak-Bakia (1926), as well as his own Song for the Cubists and flababble 1. To Blonk, silence is deafening.
