They came from the Bronx with a tough style of dance music that blended the take-no-shit attitude of punk with the insistent beat of disco. The group's name was ESG, and in 1980s New York, its sound took the downtown scene by storm. Rubbing shoulders with similarly minded disco-not-disco peers, ESG's playfully aggressive singles "Moody," "UFO," and "Dance" have since become staple sample fodder for generations of house and hip-hop producers. Along the way, its tracks have slipped into the sets of DJs from Larry Levan to James Murphy. With a wild live reputation preceding it, the group has now reformed — with all original members — for one last tour.
